Statement
Estelle Browne is a printmaker who transforms the mundane into the monumental. Through drawing Estelle Browne communicates the unique way she sees ordinary everyday items. Using a low vantage point and dramatic lighting as a starting point her drawings seek to create sculptural form and a sense of the iconic. For Estelle Browne drawing is integral to her practice she says of the drawing process; "I am interested in making evident the processes of drawing: the marks made are as important as the subject, acting as proof and reminder of the artist's hand and presence." Through printmaking Estelle Browne has enlarged her drawings so that a regular size cheese grater becomes a metre high. On this scale textures made by finger marks in paint, splatters, even erased areas are highlighted as if under the microscope.
Her subjects, household items and kitchen utensils, are the tools of Estelle Browne's other profession, one she reluctantly entitles 'housewife'. A job that Estelle Browne acknowledges both fits around and often overtakes her role as an artist. The tools of her trade are integral to her family life and often when breaking off from drawing, the item in focus has to be removed from the studio to the kitchen to perform its intended function. For this reason Estelle Browne has included artist's tools such as paintbrushes in amongst kitchen items, symbolising her dual role.
